ガラスの「やわらかさ」をかたちに

花岡央さんの「Gravity（グラビティ）」は、ガラスが本来持つ“やわらかさ”を表現したシリーズです。

水のようにやわらかく見える透明ガラスは、ぴたりと動かない固いまま。一方で、重く硬そうに見えるカラーガラスは、重力に身をゆだねるように、やわらかくつぶれたり、曲がったりしながら形を変えています。

吹きガラスの制作中、ガラスは高温で溶け、重力によってゆっくりと形を変える、とてもやわらかな素材です。完成したガラスからはなかなか想像することのできない、その一瞬の姿。

「やわらかそうなのに、固い。」
「固そうなのに、やわらかい。」

見た目から受ける印象と、実際に起きていること。そのギャップを通して、普段は見えないガラスのやわらかさを感じさせてくれます。

見る角度によって、透明なガラスと色ガラスの重なりや、つぶれ、歪みの表情もさまざまに。ガラスという素材の不思議さと、制作の一瞬をそのまま閉じ込めたような造形をお楽しみください。

Capturing the Softness of Glass

Hiroi Hanaoka’s “Gravity” series explores the inherent softness of glass.

The clear glass, which appears fluid and soft like water, remains perfectly still and solid. In contrast, the colored glass, seemingly heavy and rigid, yields to gravity—gently collapsing, bending, and shifting into shape.

During the glassblowing process, glass is heated until molten, becoming an exceptionally soft material that slowly changes form under the pull of gravity. It is a fleeting state that can be difficult to imagine once the glass has cooled and hardened.

Through this contrast between what we perceive and what is actually happening, the Gravity series reveals a side of glass that is usually hidden from view—its remarkable softness.

As the viewing angle changes, so too do the overlapping layers of clear and colored glass, along with the subtle distortions, curves, and compressed forms. Each piece captures both the fascinating nature of glass and a fleeting moment from the making process.
